Cultural Connections

The Problem We All Live With is an illustration representing the experience of Ruby Bridges, the first African-American child to attend an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. In 1960, Ms. Bridges was escorted to and from school to a waiting car by U.S. Marshals. In 1999, Ms. Bridges established a foundation that promotes the values of tolerence, respect, and appreciation of all differences. The painting was on view outside of the Oval Office in 2011.
